The Phases Approach

At Phases Virginia, our practice approach to therapy is rooted in three core principles: an evidence-based approach, holistic perspective, and compassionate, gentle support.  We believe in looking at a client's well being as a whole, rather than just their diagnosis or problem they present. This will better equip you to navigate the world with confidence and long term well-being.

Evidence-Based Practices

We follow evidence-based practices to provide effective therapy that is grounded in research and proven methodologies. Our approach goes beyond just addressing the problem at hand – we view each client holistically, considering their unique circumstances, strengths, and goals.

Holistic Perspective

By embracing an integrative approach, we work collaboratively with you to develop personalized treatment plans that take into account your individual needs, values, and lifestyle. We focus not only on alleviating symptoms but also on fostering long-term well-being and personal growth that you can take with you into the next phase of life.

Compassion + Gentle Support

We believe in the power of compassion and gentle support throughout the therapeutic journey. Our dedicated therapists create a safe and supportive space where you can feel heard, understood, and valued. We recognize that healing and growth happen when you are met with empathy and kindness.

Do any of these scenarios sound like you?

  • I get easily irritated, frustrated, angry with my loved ones, coworkers, teachers, friends

  • I worry a lot about the “what ifs” in life. I worry about my family my job my finances, my future I worry about things that I can control and they not have enough time or energy to handle. I worry about things that I can’t control at all.

  • I’m sad a lot. I think about all the sad things happening in the world around me and the lack of control I have over my life over other people’s lives over the sadness that hurts people around me hurts me hurts the people I love.

  • I avoid connecting with people. I avoid phone calls. I avoided texting back. It takes me a long time to respond to text to respond to emails and despite what others may think I do care a lot and I do not take it lightly that it is hard to respond in a timely manner.

  • I feel lost in my own thoughts.

  • I’m a student-athlete with so much going on between practices, tournaments/games, school, and social life that it can be overwhelming and stressful

  • Overall happy person with a great life, friends, and/or job.  Yet, feel like you aren’t reaching goals, finding meaning, or being fulfilled.

Let’s break down the stigma

It can be difficult to know when you need help.

We are dedicated to eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health services and creating a safe space for you to seek the help you deserve.

  • Therapy is for everyone.

  • Mental health problems are common

  • You don’t need a diagnosis to seek help

  • Your mental health matters…always

  • Seeking help takes courage

  • We are here when you’re ready

Trauma is a perceived or actual threat to safety and stability in the world.

The stress response a person has to trauma, to experiencing the ups and downs of life, impacts our bodies and brains and how we move through our lives. Impacts are finally being heavily researched and given the level of importance deserved.

We are trauma-informed care providers. We recognize and respond to the impact of trauma and traumatic stress on a person. Our trauma knowledge and awareness allow us to maximize physical and psychological safety, facilitate recovery, and support a person’s ability to thrive.

As a clinical practice we:

  • Routinely screen for trauma exposure and related symptoms.

  • Use evidence-based, culturally responsive assessment and treatment for traumatic stress and associated mental health symptoms.

  • Make resources available to children, families, and providers on trauma exposure, its impact, and treatment.

  • Address parent and caregiver trauma and its impact on the family system.

  • Emphasize continuity of care and collaboration across child-service systems.

“Individual trauma results from an event, series of events, or set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life-threatening and that has lasting adverse effects on the individual’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well being."
